I am a Professor and Co-Chair of the Creative Technology & Design curriculum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). With over 20 years of experience in Higher Education, my role is a strategic blend of academic leadership, curriculum innovation, and classroom instruction. I spearhead the development of our UX/UI and digital product design tracks while teaching specialized courses, including CT380: AI-Assisted Design.
My work is primarily centered on academic teaching and learning β specifically evolving design pedagogy to integrate generative AI β and leadership, serving as the Curriculum Committee Chair. Additionally, I am an active AI design researcher and a Founding Member of Figma's Educator Advisory Board. I serve as a leader within the Creative Intelligence Collective, a research hub dedicated to the synergy between AI and design pedagogy. My primary contribution involves pioneering AI-assisted workflows, specifically, AI-driven storytelling and "vibe coding" for digital products, which empower students to bridge the gap between conceptual design and functional execution. Through workshops and published case studies, I provide a strategic roadmap for educators transitioning from traditional instruction to an AI-integrated curriculum.
As a key contributor to the SUNY-wide academic circle, I recently presented FIT's "AI-Assisted Design" minor blueprint at the UAlbany AI Plus Annual Symposium. I envision leveraging this fellowship to scale these initiatives into a global, open-source "AI Pedagogy Toolkit." By integrating Google's latest advancements, I aim to transform local institutional success into a reproducible global model, ensuring that advanced, responsible AI literacy is accessible to all students, regardless of their technical background.
The Idea
As Co-Chair of the Creative Technology & Design curriculum at FIT, I identified a growing "Technical Barrier Gap". While my students were brilliant visual storytellers, many were excluded from the high-level digital product space because they lacked traditional computer science backgrounds. When generative AI emerged, I saw an opportunity to redefine the "technical requirement" itself. The problem wasn't that designers couldn't code; it was that the barrier to entry was syntax, not logic. I wanted to move my students away from using AI as a simple "image generator" and toward using it as a sophisticated architectural partner to build functional, logic-driven digital systems.
The Action
I developed and launched CT380: AI-Assisted Design, a pioneering course designed to test a "logic-first" pedagogy. I integrated a "vibe coding" workflow β using AI-native development environments like Gemini β to allow students to focus on system architecture and user experience rather than manual coding. To ensure this wasn't just an isolated experiment, I spearheaded the development of a formal AI-Assisted Design minor at FIT. This involved creating institutional frameworks for ethical AI usage, defining new assessment rubrics that grade "prompt logic" and "architectural intent," and building a public-facing gallery to document this new frontier of student work.
The Response
The response from students was a profound shift in professional identity; they stopped identifying as "non-technical" and began seeing themselves as "Creative Technologists". Fear of the command line was replaced by the excitement of building complex, data-driven prototypes. My colleagues and institutional leaders recognized that this wasn't just a new course, but a blueprint for the future of the department. This internal success led to an invitation to share FIT's model at the UAlbany AI Plus Annual Symposium, where peers from across the SUNY system sought to replicate our curriculum to bridge their own institutional AI gaps.
The Impact
The impact is visible in the Gallery of AI-Assisted Design. Outcomes are measured not just by the visual quality of the work, but by the functionality of the digital products created β many of which were technically impossible for design students to build just two years ago. Furthermore, the successful approval of the AI-Assisted Design minor serves as a permanent institutional change, affecting hundreds of students annually.
Reflection
Looking back, I learned that AI literacy is less about teaching new "tools" and more about teaching "systemic thinking". If I were to do this differently, I would focus even earlier on cross-departmental collaboration, as AI-assisted design naturally dissolves the silos between design, business, and technology. This process has reinforced my belief that the future of design education belongs to the "orchestrators" β those who can leverage AI to bridge the gap between imagination and execution.
To keep up to date, I maintain a high-frequency feedback loop between the AI startup ecosystem and the classroom. I proactively partner with emerging startups to bring "in-development" tools directly into my FIT courses, ensuring students engage with technology as it is being built.
Beyond direct industry engagement, my roles as a Friends of Figma Education Leader and Founding Member of the Figma Educator Advisory Board provide a front-row seat to shifts in professional design workflows. I stay current through technical deep-dives into AI-native development environments like Gemini, following the "vibe coding" evolution via GitHub, TLDR AI, and The Rundown.
Conferences like the UAlbany AI Plus Symposium and Google I/O are essential for institutional grounding. This "industry-first" approach allows me to move past theoretical trends and focus on the practical, logic-based orchestration that defines the future of creative technology.

The central challenge in my role as Co-Chair is the obsolescence of artifact-based assessment, which now complicates how we define Intellectual Property (IP). With AI-native tools enabling instant, high-fidelity output, the "final artifact" is no longer a reliable measure of student mastery. The real work β strategic orchestration, prompt architecture, and critical curation β often remains invisible, yet it defines a student's true "intellectual fingerprint." This raises a key question: how do we validate Human Creative Art Direction within complex workflows? By applying 20th-century rubrics to 21st-century processes, we create gaps in both assessment integrity and the recognition of student-led IP.
The Fellowship Vision
I hope this fellowship serves as a global laboratory to explore a shift: From Artifact-Based Grading to Cognitive-Process Assessment. I want to redefine "rigor" as the human-in-the-loop logic that transforms AI output into protected, original IP. I aim to leverage the cohort's expertise to help FIT architect a framework that validates Human Creative Art Direction as the core value in the creative process. I want to learn how my global peers are protecting the human "intellectual fingerprint" to ensure our students lead a logic-first creative economy.
